Farmers in Ndeiya, Limuru Sub-County have been urged to take advantage of the El Nino rains and construct fish ponds in order to diversify their source of food and income.

Speaking when she visited some fish farmers in Ndeiya on Tuesday, Limuru Sub-County agricultural officer Ann Koimbori, said that Ndeiya's warm climate was suitable for fish like tilapia that grow faster in such climates.

"Let not this El Nino rain just come and go. I urge farmers in this sub-county and especially those in Ndeiya to tap the rain water and start fish ponds because the weather here is not cold which leads to fish growing slowly,” said Koimbori.

Koimbori noted that most of the fish consumed in homes, hotels and restaurants in the sub-county come from outside while the area was capable of producing enough fish for home consumption and sale.

"The capital required for starting a fish pond is minimal and the returns are relatively high,” she said.

The officer said her office and staff were always ready to provide any advice to existing and potential fish farmers.
