Needy students benefiting from a bursary fund sponsored by Kisii Education Welfare Association will have to work extra hard in their studies to continue enjoying the sponsorship.

Speaking to the press in his office on Wednesday, the association’s chairman Patrick Kinyonga said from now henceforth, payment of the bursaries will be based on students performance.

Kinyonga said the association arrived at the decision after realising that the performance of some of the beneficiaries was wanting.

The association awards scholarships to needy but bright students in secondary schools and has so far sponsored 28.

This year, an additional 50 students benefited from Sh1 million raised in 2014 in a charity walk organised by the association in collaboration with the county government.

According to the chairperson, some of the beneficiaries were taking the grants for granted hence the decision to peg the sponsorship on one’s performance so that they can be more serious in their studies.

He said instead of working hard in school, some students just go and relax with the knowledge that their fees will automatically be paid by the sponsor.

“The fact that some of the students are not taking their studies seriously even with the sacrifice our donors are making to see them through their education is highly regrettable. This is the reason we are changing our strategy to ensure they work hard or else the sponsorship be withdrawn,” he said.

Previously, the association has been paying fees in full yearly but will from now be doing so in installments strictly for the students who will be performing well in school.
