The Nakuru county government will invest Sh4 million in the construction of a new sewer service line in Bondeni.
This follows the blockage of the line in the Nakuru East Sub-County area.
Nakuru Director of Environment, Eng Johnson Kamau, the contractor is on site and the works have begun for the next one and a half months.
He said that the service line had been done poorly since the municipality era and has caused a huge blockage which has also resulted to blockage of the storm water drainage system.
"We are going to overhaul the whole system and do a new one. Already, works have begun in exhausting the service line before we embark on removing it,’ he said.
The department of water is also working with Nakuru Water and Sanitation Company (NAWASCO) in the project.
Nawasco sewerage officer Paul Kihumba said that after the completion of the sewer service line, all residents are also expected to connect to the new water system to avoid blockages.
"Despite having bad service lines, water was also a problem since most of these people are not connected. In the project completion, all of them must connect to the water line as per the public health act," said Kihumba.
He noted that enough water helps in the sewer flow and reduces blockages.
Eng Kamau added that they have negotiated with the department of county public health to give more time for the completion of the service line before taking any legal action against area residents discharging raw sewage into the streets.
Nakuru chief of health Samuel Mwaura pointed out that poor drainage is one of their major challenge in fighting waterborne diseases
"We lost 16 people to cholera while at least 250 were treated for the disease. Improving the drainage system will help us deal with the occurrence of such diseases," he said.
