The university started fish farming in May 2010 with only common varieties of fish, including African tilapia and the cat fish.

A new fish specie called Parpas was introduced into the ponds.

Mr Kefa Gatwere, the farming department officer, said that they have introduced fifty Parpas fish for trials.

"We decided to introduce this new specie to see if it can survive here," said Gatwere.

He also said that these new fish mature much faster than the tilapia and weigh much heavier too.

Compared to 9kgs of the African tilapia, the Parpas weigh up to 12kgs if well fed and reared.

The Parpas specie was bought at Sh5 each as fingerlings and are expected to bring double profits after 6-9 months.

These fingerlings were carefully introduced into the waters using nets shaped into boxes and put into the middle of the pond.

The fish farming culture has grown due to high demand by students and staff members.
