A newly married couple has burnt to death in a rented house in Molo’s Mukinyai shopping centre.
Neighbours say the Monday morning fire consumed the middle-aged man, who has five children with his first wife of 13 years, and the second wife that he married a week ago.
“He has been living here for over 13 years and it is only last week that he married the second wife,” said a neighbour, who requested to be unnamed.
“The man worked at a nearby quarry while the young woman was a housewife," he added.
Another neighbour, Olpha Kemunto, said residents heard screams from the house at around 3am but were unable to rescue the couple as the house was engulfed in flames within a few minutes.
“We heard a loud explosion and screams from the room at around 3am and when we got out, we saw fire all over the place. We tried to save our neighbour but it was too late,” Kemunto said.
Area police boss Joseph Mwamburi confirmed the incident, saying police are carrying out investigations to establish the cause of the fire.
Bodies of the deceased were taken to Molo hospital’s mortuary.
