Thika MP Alice Ng'ang’a has asked women to join the fight against the rising illicit brewing in the constituency.

Addressing residents at Thika town on Sunday, Ng'ang’a said that women are the most impacted with illicit brewing activities.

She said that many women have been abandoned by their husbands and have been left to fend for their families single handedly.

The MP said that the illicit brewing is a serious issue in some parts of Kiambu.

“Women should step in and lead the fight against illicit brews because they are the one suffering the most,” said Ng'ang’a.

The Thika lawmaker said that illicit brewing will be tamed if the government employs specific tactics.

She alleged that some of the dens and bars selling illegal drinks are operated by prominent people.

Ng'ang’a said that illegal alcohol and brewing continues to paint Kiambu negatively.

“Now everybody knows that Kiambu is the home of illicit brewing and illegal alcohol. We must work towards changing this by eradicating brewing,” she said.

The MP asked the government to start programmes that will help youths who are addicted to alcohol.

She said that 30 percent of the youth population in some parts of Kiambu is addicted to alcohol.

The MP’s sentiments come as police raided and recovered 800 litres of illicit brew in Witeithe on Saturday.

The raid by police and youths saw 20 people arrested and will be arraigned in court on Monday.
