The Police department in Kiambu has reiterated its commitment to rid the force of corruption and repair the tattered image of traffic police officers.

Speaking on Thursay during an open forum with members of the public in Kiambu Town, area OCPD Stephen Ng'etich said that the the police department will go out of its way to identify ways of dealing with corruption within the traffic department.

He said the vice was a major contributor to the large number of accident cases on the roads.

The police boss who was accompanied by other police officers noted that restoration of sanity on the Kenyan roads was not an option.

He said the issue of classifying areas as black spots has to come to an end through discipline on the roads and following traffic rules.

Ng'etich noted that corruption was a major impediment in the police department as it was to blame for many shortcomings within the police force.

He said they would soon be calling on members of the public to forward names of corrupt officers as the clean up exercise in the force progresses.

The OCPD said that in view of its serious nature, corruption was one of the criteria being used to axe police officers as the force struggles to redeem its position.

“The Police Service has constantly been named in corruption indexes as one of the most corrupt institutions and there is need to reverse that image,” said Ng'etich.

The OCPD said that Public Service Vehicle operators raised concern over increased corruption on the roads, saying that it was impacting heavily on the sector.

The operators said police officers were using the roads to enrich themselves by arresting matatu operators arbitrarily.

He assured members of the public that those found will be dealt with accordingly adding that the police department is looking to establish a healthy working relationship based on mutual trust and common goals.
