Farmers in Nyamira County have a reason to smile as they are set to benefit from an irrigation project to be sponsored by the National Irrigation Board (NIB).
County chief irrigation officer Frank Ombati said Nyabomite, Eaka and Charachani locations of Nyamira South Sub-County are set to benefit from the scheme that is set to begin soon.
The project, which aims to capture the semi-arid areas in the county, is set to benefit all kinds of farming in the region and its source of water will be Keera Falls.
Speaking at a consultative meeting in Nyamira on Thursday, Ombati assured the stakeholders that a feasibility study on the project was underway, and small-scale farmers at the grassroots would benefit from the project which he remarked will be very affordable and accessible to all farmers.
“I want to make it clear to you that this project is not meant for large scale farmers only but all farmers because it’s affordable,” said Ombati.
The area county commissioner, Josephine Onunga said most residents depend on agriculture as their livelihoods and therefore urged them to embrace the project to improve their lives.
“As we can see from the research, all of us here depend on agriculture for daily upkeep and there is need to grasp this idea for better lives and increase our food production in the region and the country at large,” she said.
