Kisumu County Police Commandant Nelson Njiri has said that transferring police officers from the region to other stations will not reduce crime.
Speaking in Kisumu Cental on Monday Njiri accused politicians calling for the move of selfish interests.
“Officers removal from office just suspends the noise but does not stop crime. We arrests all kinds of people and therefore in the process step into other peoples’ shoes that can make them call for overhaul of police,” said Njiri.
He was reacting to calls by Kisumu Central MP Ken Obura and his Kisumu East counterpart Shakeel Shabbir who had asked the Inspector General (IG) of Police Joseph Boinet to conduct a complete overhaul of police bosses in Kisumu.
The IG is expected to visit Kisumu on Thursday to open new stations in the city, although the dates have not yet been disclosed.
The County Commissioner Erastus Ekidor speaking to Hivisasa on phone, said that apart from the few cases reported, Kisumu was largely peaceful.
He urged residents to cooperate with the police and report any criminal case for the authorities to take action against those terrorising residents.
“The members of the public should help us by reporting suspects so that we carry out comprehensive investigations and bring those involved to book,” said Ekidor.
He said that Kisumu is a peaceful town and that every stakeholder should work hard to attract investors.
