Njoro MP Joseph Kiuna has called on the government to provide relief food to residents of Lare Ward in Nakuru after an unexpected crop failure.

Speaking on Wednesday while distributing food to families, Kiuna urged the government and other organisations to provide more help.

“I am calling the government to intervene and provide Lare residents with relief food,” he said.

The MP said that the area had experienced a sudden lack of rainfall when crops were yet to mature.

“The unexpected dry spell has left most residents without any food,” he added.

The legislator said the government has responsibility to provide relief food to any part of the country in times of hunger.

“Residents have right to be provided with relief food like other parts of the country that are hit by drought “, said Kiuna.

Kiuna said that farmers in the area had done their best in their farms but the weather worked against them

“These farmers had planted enough crops to beat food insecurity but their produce was destroyed by unexpected dry period,” he added.

He also urged farmers to use modern farming technologies to increase food production.

During the exercise over 300 residents received an assortment of cereals ranging from beans maize and finger millet.

This comes at a time when there are revelations that the country is likely to face food shortage in coming months following delayed planting of maize in Rift Valley, and the destructive Maize Neurosis Disease (MND) which has affected production
