The National Transport and Safety Authority has decried low levels of motor vehicle compliance in Nyanza region.
The authority said on Wednesday that noncompliance to stipulated safety regulations explains the high number road accidents in the region.
The authority Director General Francis Meja said many public service vehicles have failed to go for compliance as required by law.
Meja said many vehicles are operating without stickers that approve them as compliant warning motorists against using fake compliance certificates.
“It is now very easy to have your vehicle complaint. Avoid using fake documents to hoodwinked enforcement authorities that you are compliant,” he said.
Speaking in Kisumu when he addressed PSV sacco chairpersons, heads of driving schools and motor vehicle dealers drawn from Western Kenya, Meja said that for road safety to be guaranteed, vehicles must be complaint.
He said over loading and tampering with speed governors is still rampant on the road and asked the officials of the PSV saccos to rein in on their drivers and conductors.
However, a sacco official, John Otieno said the intention of compliance was noble but expensive.
Mr Otieno said there are many vehicles plying routes without going for compliance thus killing the spirit of compliance.
“It is very expensive to go for compliance and you find out that some PSV are operating without compliance certificates. This is business and everyone in the sector wants to make profit,” he said.
He said corruption in the transport sector has also contributed to the non compliance of motor vehicles.
