A male nurse attached to a private hospital in Nakuru was on Tuesday arraigned in court and charged with attempted rape.

Macharia Ochomba was accused of committing the offence on June 17 this year at Baraka nursing home in Nakuru town.

The court heard that the accused had injected the patient with a sleep aiding drug before attempting to rape the sick lady. The patient was, however, rescued by another nurse on duty at about 2am.

The complainant claimed that she felt drowsy after the injection and before she passed out, the accused came back to the room and removed his jacket. He proceeded to fondle her breast and tried to separate her legs when she woke up and confronted him.

“I was admitted at the nursing home on Friday last week where I was being attended at night by a woman. On Sunday, a male nurse came at 1am and woke me up to check how I was doing,” she added.

The complainant said she never suspected the nurse had bad intentions during his numerous visits until he injected her with the unknown medicine.

“He came at 2am on Monday checking on my progress and told him that I was in pain. When he injected me, I felt drowsy and took a lot of water and later fell asleep,” the complainant said.

Baraka nursing home proprietor Dr Isoe Ochoki acknowledged the incident and apologised to the patient and the family. He said legal action would be taken against the ‘rogue nurse’.

“It was a surprise because in medicine, such malpractices are not allowed. I am sorry for what happened and thank the patient and the husband for reporting the matter to us,” Ochoki said.

The accused, however, denied the charges before chief magistrate Samuel Mungai and was released on a Sh200,000 bond.

The case will be heard on August 12 this year.
