Agricultural officers who were recently recruited by the county government of Nyamira have been challenged to provide quick solutions in regards to poor yields.
Speaking during a visit at the Borabu settlement scheme on Thursday, Governor John Nyagarama wondered why farmers continued getting poor yields despite the investment of the county government in agriculture.
He said the over 100 officers risked sacking following emerging reports that they were not equipping farmers with relevant knowledge on improving the yields.
“I have a strong background of agriculture and that is why I was compelled to employ extension officers in a bid to improve our yields. However, I do not know why farmers continue getting poor results despite the experts we had deployed to the ground. They have to start working or quit their jobs,” he said.
Nyagarama said the county had set aside over Sh400m for the financial year and urged the extension officers to impact on agriculture by advising farmers alternative methods of farming.
“We have put resources in the sector and it is high time that we start seeing results. The officers ought to move to interior parts to educate farmers on good practices,” he added.
The county boss urged farmers to focus on putting the county on the global map in matters agriculture besides urging political leadership to give favourable environment for development.
