Nyamira county culture and social groups have put the county’s department of culture and social services on notice over alleged exclusion in the cultural developments in the county.
Speaking during the election of Nyamira County cultural council yesterday, the national traditional health practitioners chair and a renowned herbalist Paul Okibo wondered why the department was being allocated funds when it could not execute its mandates.
“We wonder why in the last three years since the office was put in place, it has not recognised us and why are they allocated the fund of which they are not using for the intended functions. They should therefore not be allocated the funds if they are not ready to support us to promoting culture,” said Okibo.
“These members elected today here will have to sit with our governor and decide on the way forward because the department supposed to be leading us as sidelined us, we cannot work with people who are not willing to support us,” added Okibo.
The 15 member cultural council drawn from each of the five sub counties in Nyamira will initiate the construction of cultural centres in every sub county after the main centre at the County headquarters.
The council pledged support for the county government to ensure that a cultural centre is built in Nyamira and that tradition and cultural values are retained among the Abagusii community.
