Teachers and KNUT officials from Masaba North Sub County have lauded the judiciary for the historic ruling on Tuesday, which compelled the government to increase the basic salary between 50-60% from July 1 to June 30, 2017.

The teachers’ movement had gone to court to challenge the Salaries and Remuneration Commission over the proposed job evaluation, in which industrial Court in Nairobi ruled that the SRC had powers to evaluate jobs.

According to Masaba teachers, the 1997 CBA was long overdue, and hailed the court for ruling in favour of teachers in terms of basic salary increment.

“We are finally very happy and this is a clear indication that the Industrial Court is unbiased when handling these matters. This is a huge ruling and as teachers, we support it wholeheartedly,” said Secretary General James Oteki.

They vowed to work hard in a bid to improve the education standards in the region, besides asking stakeholders to support the union in its entire endeavor.

“As a union, we want to ask our teachers to now concentrate on improving education standards in the region and all stakeholders including the government should join hands in assisting leaners where necessary,” added Treasurer Peter Momanyi.

They asked parents who were in the meeting that was convened by Mochenwa Zone at Mochenwa Primary school to give teachers easy time to deliver on their obligations.

“We want to ask parents to give teachers humble time. Continued interference on matters education is unacceptable especially when it isn’t necessary,” Oteki said.
