Nurses in Nyamira have given the County Government a seven-day strike notice over alleged poor working conditions and remuneration.
Speaking to the press in Nyamira town, Nyamira branch executive secretary of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) Mr Richard Oruta said that the county had made their work difficult and efforts by union officials to reach out to the administration have been futile.
"Many of us have stayed in the same job group for over five years and still the government reluctant to promote us," he said.
He lamented that several nurses who had applied for promotions to the county government had been denied on grounds that the files of the respective nurses were yet to be received from the national government.
"Why haven't they retrieved the files from the ministry three years after the function was devolved?" he asked.
The union leader says the move is a deliberate delay meant to frustrate their career progression. He claims that the situation has highly demoralised staff reducing service delivery.
The nurses have also claimed that the county government has not prioritised the health sector, a situation they say has led Nyamira being ranked among the poorest performers in the health sector countrywide.
Oruta demanded that the County government addresses their grievances vowing to down their tools and paralyse health operations if their issues are not addressed.
