Nyamira Boys Secondary School in Nyamira County is counting losses, after fire razed down a students’ dormitory destroying property of unknown value.
The dormitory, which accommodates up to 40 students, caught fire at around 2 pm, and boda boda operators together with the neighbouring locals tried to put out the fire, but were not able to due to lack of proper equipment.
Nyamira town residents showed their dissatisfaction with the slow response from the county government, and for lack of a fire engine in the county, adding that fire incidents have been on the rise in the recent past.
“We thank God the fire broke out during the day because if this happened at night, we don’t know what would have happened to our children,” said one of the residents.
The residents also called on the county government to ensure they have fire engines as soon as possible to help in such cases.
During the reading of the 2015/2016 budget, finance CeC John Omanwa said that the county government had set aside Sh30 million to help in buying a fire engine and other fire extinguishing materials.
