The National Youth Service (NYS) plans to carry out a slum upgrading programme in Kisii town in the coming few weeks.
The project will target four main slums in the town and work will begin once the workforce to undertake the task are recruited, a youth official said.
Nubia, Daraja Mbili and Town shanties will be pulled down, according to the chairman of the National Youth Council, Kisii chapter, Evans Mageka.
‘‘We are targeting to recruit at least 500 youth of both gender from Kitutu Chache South, where the slums are based, to help in the project,” he said.
Workers will get a Sh15,000 monthly pay, according to Mr Mageka, who also works as a statistician in the county.
Mageka made the remarks in the sidelines of a of a youth function at Kisii town on Monday.
“Better and permanent structures will replace the shanties, and hopefully may being in the next two weeks,” he said.
He called on the youth to seek the jobs through regional administrators, including chiefs.
He said the recruitment drives will be carried out in the coming week with the help of area MCAs and administrators.
‘‘The process will be fair,” he said, adding that each of the five wards will contribute a 100 youth towards the project.
He said, Devolution CS Ann Waiguru will officially launch the project once the recruitment is over.
“Right now I cannot comment how much would be put into the project because the minister is coming to inaugurate the project and is likely to give the figures by herself,” said Mr Mageka.
