A police officer was arraigned before a Mombasa Court on Tuesday to answer to charges of taking a bribe.

Constable George Ochieng is accused of receiving a Sh2,000 bribe from a charcoal dealer which he swallowed during the time of his arrest prosecution told court.

The accused who is a National Police Service driver is facing three charges of corruptly soliciting, receiving and concealing a bribe by swallowing the two Sh1,000 notes.

Accirding to prosecution, Mr Ochieng on September 8, solicited money from Mr Dzenga Mwamnyumbi, a charcoal transporter at Kinango.

On the material day, the court heard that the officer had confiscated the driving licence and a charcoal business permit of Mr Mwamnyumbi.

Mr Ochieng attached to Kinango in Kwale County is said to have asked for the money from Mr Mwamnyumbi in order to return the driving licence and the charcoal permit back to him.

The accused however denied all the charges before Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Odenyo and pleaded to be released on bail.

Magistrate Odenyo granted the request and ordered for the accused to be released on a Sh30,000 cash bail or Sh50,000 bond.

The case will be heard on December 3.
