Speaking at the Nyayo gardens on Wednesday after launching a dirt collection programme in Nakuru town, planning county executive Joel Maina noted that a clean environment was essential for a healthy society.

He called on a collective approach on the physical planning of the county headquarters, arguing that the town’s cleanliness says a lot about the organisation of people residing in it.

“Let’s prioritise environmental cleanliness because at the end of the day, this is our county and we are entitled to all activities geared towards making it better and safe for our co-existence,” he said.

The roads and planning CeC noted that the county had spent a lot in initiating a city beautification project that saw litter bins and flower beds erected at designated areas within the town centre but regretted the fact that a majority of the residents were yet to adapt to making significant use of the projects.

“It’s interesting that while a majority of the litter bins remain empty, our flower gardens are full of dirt as a result of irresponsible dirt disposing techniques,” he explained.

Maina noted that it takes extra effort to have the uncollected garbage or rather the dirt disposed at undesired places picked and deposited at the official dumping site.

The programme will see environmental groups, college students and non-governmental organisations traverse different parts of the city collecting dirt to ensure a clean and healthy environment.
