Ogembo residents in Kisii County have been told to be cautious over fake currency notes that are reportedly in circulation and targeting small business owners, and more especially M-pesa operators.
Area OCPD Richard Korir issued the warning on Friday after few cases and two M-Pesa shops reportedly lost thousands of shillings to swindlers who deposited fake currency.
He lamented that the fake currency circulators are targeting unsuspecting small business owners, and called upon them to be on the lookout and ensure that they carefully examine any money they handled to avoid falling prey to the tricksters.
Korir urged the residents to be more kin on 1,000 and 500 shilling notes as they are the ones in high circulation in the cases reported.
“It is easy to detect fake currency and currently we are in search of those circulating the money so that they can face the law,” said Korir
This comes after Rodgers Orwaru, an M-Pesa owner was on Thursday swindled of Sh40,000 by a customer who gave the fake money.
According to Orwaru, he did not check the money, only to realize later when he issued to another client, and they reported the matter to the police.
