A man has been killed in Karagita area of Naivasha after police opened fire to a group of rioters demonstrating the death of their colleague. Two other people are in critical condition at the Naivasha district hospital. The Sunday shooting incidence comes after two days of heavy demonstrations by the residents who claim that a white settler in the area had killed a fisherman and accused him of being a poacher. Armed with placards and twigs, they blocked the busy Naivasha-Maella route, demanding an explanation from the police. This was after their attempt to burn down the estate of the settler was thwarted by the police. Armed policemen had a hard time dispersing the irate crowd with tear gas, who threw back the canisters at them “They were three people on the lake and the man started shooting at them,” said John Njoroge, a resident. “However, two managed to escape. Meanwhile, one cannot be tracked although we saw his clothes littered with blood,” Njoroge added. He said that this was not the first incident that the settler had collided with the residents over alleged shootings. The residents claim that the settler had the habit of shooting any fisherman on the lake and branding him a poacher Another resident, Kevin Odhiambo, said: “We demand an explanation from the government. Otherwise these riots will continue until they give us a logical reason why the man was shot.” Naivasha MP John Kihagi tried to calm the residents, saying they were already trying to establish the truth. “We are investigating if the man was shot and why the anti-stock theft was involved and not the police,” he added.
