Kisii Governor James Ongwae has raised concern over the low number of households connected with electricity in the county.

Ongwae regretted that Kisii County has a population of over 1.4 million but only 80,000 households are connected.

Speaking on Thursday during the launch of Kenya Power South Nyanza regional office, Mr Ongwae directed the officers in charge of energy docket to liaise with Kenya Power to ensure that every household is connected.

"We are happy with KPLC's efforts of ensuring every homestead get connected with power. We appreciate the reduction of connection charges from Sh35,000 to Sh15,000," he said.

He added: "However, we ask the government to consider reducing power supply fee to Sh10,000 so that it can be affordable to a good number of people."

Kenya Power Managing Director Dr Ben Chumo said the creation of the new office was in line with the current national dispensation to devolve services to counties.

The South Nyanza region was curved from the larger West Kenya Region and will be in charge of Kisii, Nyamira, Migori and Homa Bay counties.

Chumo announced that connectivity charges has gone down from sh35,000 to Sh15,000 and expressed interest to partner with the county government to light streets and market centres.
