Kisii County Governor James Ongwae has warned leaders and parents against politicising the county bursary scheme.

He said those who were claiming it was not offering full scholarships to students in public universities were lying.

In a statement released by his office on Thursday, Ongwae said the bursary initiative should not be politicised but instead it should be supported fully to improve the county’s education levels.

He noted that the scheme was aimed at improving education standards which have been low due to lack of school fees. He said poverty was the major drawback in the education sector.

Ongwae noted that through the bursary, many students were able to continue with their studies. This included students who joined national schools and universities under the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

The governor blamed leaders for misleading the public that university students were benefiting from Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) yet not all students benefited from such loans.

“It must be understood that not all students who apply for HELB succeed because there is no guarantee that all students will be awarded the loans,” he stated.
