Yaata MP Francis Mwangangi on Wednesday told his constituents to support initiatives aimed at improving security in the constituency.
The MP who spoke at a press briefing in his office said insecurity can only be fought against if residents collaborated with security agencies.
He praised the Nyumba Kumi initiative saying it was the best way of containing run-away insecurity.
"We should be united in this and fight the crimes together if we want to live in a secure society," the MP said.
"The increase in crime incidences in Yatta has been caused by the failure to work together between police and the public and I believe if we do that we will all be secure here."
The legislator said members of the public are well placed to inform authorities of suspicious characters and their activities so that necessary action can be taken.
He noted that criminals operated from communities living in Kenya and unless locals fully supported the government, then the nation would continue suffering from preventable lawlessness.
At the same time the MP asked those in charge of security to handle information volunteered to them by members of the public with caution to avoid victimisation of the whistle blowers.
