Siaya Senator James Orengo has assured Kibera residents that a lasting solution will be found for the persistent conflicts between tenants and landlords in the area.

While addressing the public at Kamukunji grounds in Kibera on Tuesday during celebrations to mark Mashujaa Day, Orengo promised the residents that he will join other lawyers to settle the dispute that has persisted for long.

"I want a small team to work with me and the Cord lawyers so that we can have a discussion on how to solve this matter. Tenants in Kibera should not be intimidated by the local administration like chiefs, and other security personnel," said Orengo.

"The issue of rent is between the landlords and the tenants and the chiefs should not interfere."

He was responding to concerns expressed by the residents through the Kamukunji village chairman Joash Okello who alleged that tenants were constantly being harassed by security officers over claims that they default in payment of house rents.

We need lawyers to help us in Kibera because our people are harassed by police officers, chiefs and even senior security officers because of rent arrears. They are arrested day and night without clear reasons," Okello said.
