The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Rift Valley Region Manager, Florence Otori, has challenged county governments to join in the fight against illegal sale of petroleum products.

Speaking at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) on Tuesday where she witnessed the incineration of contraband goods impounded at the Eldoret Airport, Otori said that KRA cannot win such a fight alone but with the help of county governments alongside other agencies.

“We cannot fight this battle alone. County governments are equally responsible. It is a multi-agency approach that will stop dumping of fuel in this country,” she said.

She confirmed that KRA will not allow loss of revenue through illegal fuel dumping.

“We are fighting this illegal business because we know Kenya is losing taxes. We have Sh3 trillion to collect and we cannot sit back to lose even one shilling in fuel dumping,” she added.

This came after Uasin Gishu County Deputy Governor Daniel Chemno’s condemnation of an incident where some individuals involved in the business were arrested but later fined too little and then left to continue with the business.

According to Chemno, that would not be a good penalty for such a crime considering the individual was able to raise the fine through the illegal business.
