More than 6,000 litres of chang'aa have been confiscated by local administration police officers in Athi River, Mavoko Sub-County.
Addressing journalists on Tuesday in his office, the area's Deputy County Commissioner, Makori Kodeck, said the illicit liquor was recovered from a local illegal distiller in Mavoko location, a few kilometers from Athi River town.
"Our administration police officers early this morning netted over 6,000 litres of chang'aa brew during a crack down in a local illicit distiller along 'Mto Wa Mawe' River,” said Kodeck.
Kodeck said the officers managed to confiscate the local brew and all equipment and apparatus used by the distiller to prepare it.
He said the brew had been stored in 30 drums of 200 litres each and kept underground at a segregated part of the river.
The commissioner condemned the storage method as well as the illegal trade stating that anybody can have access to the storage zone and contaminate the brew thereby putting lives of hundreds of the resident clients at risk.
Kodeck said the den's owner managed to escape but his officers were pursuing him. He urged those engaging in the illicit liquor business to seek legal ways of earning a living.
He said his office would not relent on the crack down which they started three weeks ago.
