Parents in Machakos County have been advised to take their children for medical check ups in a bid to curb child mortality in the region.

Speaking to journalists at Bondeni Children Rescue Centre on Wednesday, where she conducted a free medical check up to the orphans, Dr Joyce Mbula of Hifadhi Siha Medical Centre said child mortality rate in the county would be reduced through prevention of diseases.

"It is important for parents from Machakos County to make taking their children to health facilities for medical check ups a routine as this would help reduce child mortality rates through prevention of diseases," said Mbula.

Mbula said children's health should be checked by qualified health practitioners at least after every three months just to keep their well being on check.

According to her, diseases are easily identified during the check ups and those found with illnesses are put on treatment while the healthy ones are prevented from infections.

Mbula said the practice is necessary given that some children suffer from infectious diseases that can be transferred to other children whenever they mingle in schools, churches, area of residences and play grounds.

The doctor encouraged those taking care of children either in their houses as guardians or in children homes and centres to ensure they take the children for medical check ups, arguing prevention is better than cure.
