Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Abdi Hassan has warned parents against denying their children education.
He said that low literacy levels amongst the youth have prevented economic development in the region adding that the issue of children being prevented to attend school must be tackled urgently.
Speaking on Sunday Hassan said that many young people in Uasin Gishu miss out on job opportunities due to lack of required qualifications.
"Parents must ensure they provide education to their children since in this digital era anyone without education is useless and education is the only investment that a parent can pass to his heirs for them to benefit in future," he said.
He stressed that it is only through education that poverty would be eradicated adding that an educated youth would not solely depend on their parents but are rather capable of fending for themselves.
"I am warning parents in Uasin Gishu who still don't take their children to school but instead use them to conduct their daily chores that their days are numbered," he said.
The county commissioner says that any parent found denying their children education will be arrested and prosecuted, while stressing that basic education is compulsory.
