Parents in Kiambu County have been asked to partner with teachers in order to boost discipline in schools and help retain children in school.
While in an interview in his office on Monday, Kiambu Sub County education officer, Harrison Muriuki said parents are left out when setting discipline standards in schools and children suffer because they do not have any one to approach when they face disciplinary problems.
He urged the County Education board to form disciplinary committees that comprises of parents in order to make the whole cycle complete for children’s stay in school and to uphold discipline standards in the society.
”In order to get rid of idle youths in the society, we have to educate them and ensure they become responsible members,” he said.
The Education officer further warned the teachers against punishing the students by suspending them away from school as a disciplinary measure.
He said every issue concerning discipline must be sorted out amicably within the school and students continue with their education to get rid of school drop outs. "Sending students for a 2 or 3 week suspension contributes to poor performance as the student will be missing out when others are learning,"he noted
The education officer further urged parents not to relent in disciplining their children to avert behaviors. He also advised them to work hand in hand with the teachers in an effort to raise the academic performance in the area
