Parents in Uasin Gishu County have been urged to register their children for them to access birth certificates.

Speaking on Tuesday in his office in Kamukunji, senior chief David Simatei said the government has rolled out an initiative to issue birth certificates to eligible children.

“Parents with children below the age of 18 years should bring their children for registration in my office free of charge. We will move from house to house to ensure that the initiative is successful,” he said.

He reiterated that they have registered over 700 children since the initiative was started, noting that the number is below the target of 900 in his area of jurisdiction.

“The programme is being made possible by the use of village elders who are sensitising villagers on the importance of having the document since no child can be registered to sit the national examinations without the document,” he added.

He also urged the public to be vigilant by informing the police of any suspicious persons amongst them, besides embracing the Nyumba Kumi initiative which he noted had reduced crime in the area.

“All Nyumba Kumi initiative leaders should always take records of the people he/she represents and should report to the police with immediate effect of any suspected individual since security begins with you,” he said, and added that the government will deal with criminals to curb insecurity.
