Parents and leaders from Kisii region have been urged to adapt an alternative rite of passage for girls and avoid the primitive and risky Female Genital Mutilation (FGM).

The Nyamira county Anti-Female Genital Mutilation Board representative Irene Mogambi said there are many ways that can be adapted and celebrated than undertaking the FGM that has claimed a lot of innocent lives.

She said that the Anti-Female Genital Mutilation campaign has been successful thus far in the Kisii region though she said there are those who are still carrying it out in the dark.

The representative called upon chiefs to be vigilant and ensure that no one carries on with the activity and to take immediate action on anyone who was found.

“We have lost a lot of lives of both women and children because of the process and that is why we are being strict on this to ensure that it ends from our society,” said Irene

Nyamira and Kisii county are some of the counties who used to openly carry out Female Genital Mutilation and the current campaign is aimed at ensuring that the culture ends completely.
