Residents of Ondiri, Kikuyu Sub-County were on Tuesday shocked after a garbage collector found a baby aged about a week, wrapped in a nylon bag and dumped at a garbage site in the area.
The baby who did not have both arms is suspected to have been dumped there early Tuesday morning.
George Kirwa, a garbage collector said he was the first to notice the baby.
He said he was going about his duties at around 10am when he heard a voice of a baby that seemed to be really in pain.
"I was shocked and at the moment I thought it was a ghost," said Kirwa.
He said he lifted the nylon paper and saw the baby.
“I alerted residents so that the matter can be reported to the police and the child taken to hospital since he was shivering due to the morning cold, and of course the place is damp too,” he added.
He said he believes the mother could have abandoned the baby because he did not have both arms.
"It is ruthless for a mother who could have done this to a baby, being disabled did not mean he deserved to die and especially dumped in a garbage site. She should be arrested and jailed," said Kirwa.
Confirming the incident, Kikuyu OCPD Mutune Maweu said the matter was reported and police took immediate.
He said one woman has been arrested in connection with the incident and investigations are underway.
He said the suspect was arrested thanks to the public who gave police information.
He said police suspect that the baby was dumped early this morning and the child was disabled since he had no arms.
"It is a serious crime to neglect a baby and especially dumb them. The law will seek justice for the baby. The baby is at Kikuyu Hospital where he is being attended to and investigations are ongoing," said Maweu.
