Police are investigating a report that a gang of thugs has allegedly been terrorising pupils and staff at Old Kibera Primary School.

Complaints emerged on Monday following a Sunday night robbery at the school where valuable property including computers, television set and radio were stolen by an unknown gang.

The robbers are reported to have attacked the security guard before breaking into the school library.

Speaking to the media on Monday, the deputy headteacher Ruth Adera said there is a group of criminals that is continuously harassing students and staff demanding ransom.

She, however, blamed the security personnel for failing to take the necessary action despite such reports being availed to them.

“The Sunday night incident is just a confirmation that the school is facing security challenges. There is a group of youths that keeps terrorising the school even during the day when lessons are on. They come demanding money even from pupils threatening to harm them if they fail to do so. We have reported the incident to various security departments in vain,” said  Adera.

Talking to this reporter on the phone on Tuesday, Kilimani OCPD Peter Kattam denied having received such reports, while giving assurance of stern action to be taken.

“It is very sad to hear that thugs can resort to disturb the peace of pupils. Personally I have not received complaints but now that I am aware, I am taking the matter seriously to ensure necessary actions are taken against such criminals as well as providing proper security to all our schools,” said Kattam.

“I shall be in direct contact with the headteacher of the school so as to get the clear information of what is happening as we continue with our investigation,” he assured.
