A suspected thief is currently undergoing treatment in Nyamira Hospital after he sustained serious injuries from an angry mob for a botched robbery in Kebirigo market on Thursday.
The man was caught while stealing a Television set and a DVD from one of the hotels in Kebirigo in the wee hours.
“The owner of the hotel raised alarm that attracted neighbours and other locals around. He was beaten up and left unconscious when the police who were on patrol came to his rescue,” an eye witness Kennedy Mokunyo said.
Nyamira OCPD Rico Ngare confirmed the incident and discouraged the locals from using mob justice. He urged them to always follow the law while dealing with crime suspects or any form of law breaking.
“The locals should not take law into their own hands but always involve the police,” he said.
He said police are still investigating the identity of the man who is now admitted in Nyamira Hospital.
The police boss added that people should be vigilant enough to report any suspected cases of robbery early.
Theft cases have been on the increase recently and this has led to serious injuries, including deaths of the victims involved.
Ngare said the suspect will be arraigned in court once he recovers.
