Police in Kisumu on Monday gunned down a man suspected to be part of a gang that terrorises residents.
The man was shot dead in Migosi estate after two others suspected to be part of the gang were lynched by a mob early morning.
Police said the man was shot after officers were tipped that the man on police's list of wanted criminals was hiding in a makeshift structure in the outskirts of the lakeside town.
The one shot by police was killed as officers recovered stolen items including electronics in the house he hid in.
He was also in possession of a toy pistol police said.
Items recovered included gas cylinders, a motorbike and television sets.
Police suspect the motorbike could have been used in ferrying stolen items to the house.
The two who were lynched were escaping a police trap.
County Police Commander Nelson Njiri said the gang, popularly known as the fourty brothers has notorious members who rob and kill people.
“We have been carrying out operations in areas where we have had reports and we have had residents mentioning specific names and these are the people we are looking for,” he said.
Police are pursuing six other suspects who officers said were on a list of top wanted criminals.
Njiri said the gang mostly terrorises residents of Migosi, Nyalenda, Nyamasaria, Manyatta and Mamboleo estates.
