The alleged leakage of Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations has attracted the attention of a number of academicians in Nyamira County who are now calling for its disbandment.
Although the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) headed by Joseph Kivilu has now admitted to the presence of irregularities, the academicians from Nyamira now want the examination council to be disbanded and freshly reconstituted.
Led by Dr Nyandoro Kambi, on Sunday during a funds drive at Esise ward, the academicians said the government must disband the council and reconstitute it in a bid to bring sanity in the education sector.
“It’s so sad that examinations have lost credibility because the council cannot even lie that the exam hasn’t leaked. It is so evident and therefore, they should own the mistake and quit office. If they don’t, Kenyans will question the credibility of the results,” he said.
Nyandoro said the disbandment of Knec as it is currently constituted, will give subsequent candidates hope and need to work hard in their education for prosperity.
“I am quite sure they (Knec) will moderate the results and obviously expect some innocent candidates to be a sacrifice. They will not be able to tell whose result is genuine or not. Let government disband the body and reconstitute it afresh to reclaim the glory and trust,” he said.
Dr Stella Omari of Kisii University said it was a testing time for the quality of education in the country and challenged the current Knec secretariat to voluntarily resign and pave way for fresh leadership.
“It will be in order that they own the problem and resign. We have competent people who can take over but in a new brand. Knec has lost trust from the public and students,” she said.
