Members of the Nyamira County Assembly Public Accounts Committee (PAC) are under immense pressure to resign following the controversial Sh7 million gate scandal.
On Monday, a group of youths led by Youth Senate Chairman Jason Mogire accused the committee of failing to deliver on its mandate with the county persistently being in the news for all the wrong reasons.
They said the committee was working closely with the executive to prevent accountability on individuals who had been accused of graft.
“As the youth Senate, we want the speaker to suspend the PAC and reconstitute it. They have failed to deliver on our expectations and fighting corruption is not easy anymore,” Mogire said.
They threatened to marshal youths to launch a major demonstration as an assault on the PAC members besides accusing the executive of compromising transparency.
“The executive is always wooing MCAs to support its bid. The PAC has even failed to start investigations on the Sh7 million gate scandal and all we are being told that there is a subcommittee in charge. We will present a petition and that will only come after a major demo,” he added.
However, PAC Chairman Ezra Mochiemo urged the youths to give his committee ample time as it launches investigations on the controversial gate.
“The calls for disbanding the committee by a section of youths are premature. It will be proper for them to judge what we are doing or what we have done based on records. We have many records where we have even recommended prosecution of certain officers. The investigations on the gate scandal will be launched soon,” he said.
