The price of maize flour has risen by Sh8 in Nakuru County making life harder for families who are already on tight budgets.

A two-kilogramme packet of Pembe maize flour has gone up from Sh110 to Sh118 over the past one week, with the same retailing at Sh119 in kiosks.

The price of a two-kilogramme packet of Jogoo maize flour in retail outlets has increased from Sh109 to Sh118. A spot-check across supermarkets shows a price increase ranging from Sh5 to Sh8 depending on the brand.

Beatrice Njeri, a mother of three, reveals that feeding her young family has become an expensive affair.

“It has not been easy feeding my family. We have relied on maize flour for long but it is now becoming increasingly difficult to afford it,” she lamented.

Millers and traders are warning that the prices are likely to remain high if there is inadequate maize production this year.

“We are buying a sack of maize at Sh3,400 up from Sh2,800 and that is why we have raised the prices of Unga,” said an official from the Pembe Flour Mills company who did not want to be named.
