The Ministry of Education has been challenged to investigate and do a thorough scrutiny on members' appointment to various boards of management in schools from Kisii in a bid to root out alleged nepotism.

Speaking on Monday at Suneka during a grand meeting with the parents, former Nyanza quality education director Peter Saisi said nepotism and favoritism in selection to crucial education boards were partly affecting performances of institutions in national exams.

He said those appointed had failed to produce leadership to management of institutions due to perceived relationship with school heads that is said to be mutual.

“You cannot run an institution effectively by appointing people who are your close family members. This is what is happening around and if a serious step isn’t taken, our institutions will continue underperforming. The ministry has a role to rectify the situation,” he said.

Mr Saisi accused the Ministry of Education of failing to act on the case study of Kisii County besides blaming the persistent poor performances in the national exams to the ‘bogus’ board membership.

“You cannot probably expect to produce excellent students with bogus education board members. The ministry has failed to act on them despite constant reports. Most board members are bogus and there are unable to bring ideas to the table,” he said.

Saisi said the vice was likely to continue if the ministry failed to audit afresh the people selected to BOMs to all institutions and threatened to mobilise parents to compel the government to take an action.
