Donors of various Non-governmental Organisations in Kenya have been asked to undertake a scrutiny exercise to ascertain the usage of funds given to various organisations.
Speaking on Thursday at Dados hotel in Kisii town during the launch of the Daraja United Women and Youths Empowerment Organisation, Non-governmental Organisations council chairman Wilson Kipkazi said some of the organisations misappropriated funds instead of using them to transform the society.
However, he asked people to form more NGOs in order to get funds for development and help the vulnerable in the society.
The chairperson asked the youths to stand against all odds in the society as one way of promoting peace and cohesion.
“There are some individuals or groups that start NGOs for selfish interests. I ask donors to monitor how the funds are being used and if there is anybody abusing the grants to be taken a step because they are not benefiting the community as intended,” he suggested.
Mr Kipkazi denied that NGOs are involved in funding terror groups and asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to revert his remarks of linking some organisations to terrorism. He condemned the slashing of donor funds to NGOs
“The NGOs have been baselessly incriminated and alleged to be supporting terror activities. I want to tell the president to consider his wording before casting to the public. The NGOs are purely promoting development and helping underprivileged people in villages and therefore we don’t expect the government to stand against us,” said the NGO council chair.
He added, “However, if there are some NGOs that are involved in funding terrorist, they should carry their own cross .”
