The proposed construction of an international airport in Nakuru will benefit horticultural farmers and promote tourism, National Chamber of Commerce and Industry Nakuru chairman Kamau Njuguna has said.

Speaking to journalists over the weekend, Mr Njuguna lauded the plan saying it will boost horticultural farming and tourism sectors. He said that flower farmers in the region will have a chance to exploit markets in Europe and other parts of the world.

“Horticultural farmers will be beneficiaries if the proposal to have an airport in Nakuru sails through,” he said.

He said that flower and fruit farmers find it difficult to export their products on time since they only rely on Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

He said the county has the potential to boost its economic status if the planned construction of the airport is realized.

Meanwhile, Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has revealed that the airport will be built in Rongai or Naivasha constituencies.

In an interview with the press, Mbugua said that an evaluation and feasibility study by the Kenya Airport Authority had recommended Rongai or Naivasha. He however said deliberations are ongoing to settle on one area where the airport will be built.

The county boss also confirmed that the tendering process for the project will be completed before the end of next financial year.
