Demonstrations rocked Kisii town on Friday as residents demanded for the repair of a bridge they said had claimed seven lives.

They told Kisii Governor James Ongwae to repair Daraja Mbili bridge which they claimed had cause the death of seven people.

The angry protesters carried the coffin bearing the remains of Peter Nyakundi who is said to have drowned in Barnabas River while crossing the bridge at Mwamogesa.

They called on area MCA Pius Abuki to source for funds for the repair of the bridge.

“We are so much disappointed," one of the protesters, Elvis Omesa said.

"This bridge has cost us lives and we demand for its repair."

Governor Ongwae who addressed the protesters pledged to intervene and have the bridge repaired.

“I have heard your concerns and I have ordered the Minister for Public Works to start the work immediately," Ongwae said.

"It will take two months to complete construction of the bridge due to the process of securing concrete and metals for construction of the bridge."

“However, we will construct a temporary bridge in two weeks as we prepare to construct a permanent one. This is to prevent further fatalities."
