Kenyans have been urged to participate in programmes spearheaded by both the national and county governments to ensure transparency.

Controller of Budget Agnes Odhiambo said public participation was the only way of ensuring transparency and accountability at the two levels of governments.

“It’s the right of the public to participate in the budgeting process to ensure that there is equity, transparency and accountability and therefore funding of various projects,” she said.

The controller of budget added that county governments should play an oversight role in ensuring that county executives do not embezzle funds for their own private gains.

Speaking on Tuesday in Eldoret after paying a courtesy call on Uasin Gishu County governor Jackson Mandago, Odhiambo reiterated that the national government is embarking on a framework that will sensitise the public on public participation in the budgeting process.

“My office will guide the county governments in the budgeting process to avoid misuse of funds on luxurious projects and instead invest in projects that will benefit common mwananchi directly,” she added.
