A 13-year-old girl in Kithimani area of Yatta sub-county is recuperating in a hospital after being rescued from an attempted suicide on Tuesday evening.

Allegedly, the failed suicide mission was prompted after she was forced to work in her father’s quarry.

The class seven pupil at Kirima primary school in the area attempted to take her life after her father threatened to punish her if she did not join her two brothers to work in the quarry.

It is alleged that the pupil decided to take her life as the last resort after she realised that her father had gone out to get a cane to punish her and her mother was in support of the same leaving her with no option.

Yatta OCPD Edward Kipsang and area children’s officer Jane Munyanga have this morning led the arrest of the parents who are set to appear in court once the police are through with investigations.

Munyanga has however cautioned parents who subject their children who are minors to such activities that they will be prosecuted. She urged the public to report such cases to her office.

The OCPD has said that the pupils in the area drop out of school to earn the little money from the quarries and they will be on their heels when the schools re-open as the parents encourage them and don’t send them to school.
