Residents of Nyamira have defended opposition leader Raila Odinga on his consistent pressure to put the government on toes by asking the Jubilee leadership to crack a whip on corrupt individuals.
Speaking during a funeral ceremony at Bogichora ward on Wednesday, the residents asked the government to give Mr Odinga a break by appreciating his work as a watchdog of citizens.
They accused the Deputy President William Ruto of hampering the fight against corruption by either being mentioned on corrupt deals or defending accused officials.
“Sometimes it’s unfair to criticise Raila because he is mandated to be our watchdog as the opposition leader. The government should instead investigate some officials who have been mentioned in corrupt deals instead of blaming Raila of bringing politics into the issue. The DP is making President Kenyatta’s regime look reluctant in fighting corruption,” said Bogichoara MCA Beuttah Omanga.
They supported Mr Odinga's call to have Devolution Cabinet Secretary Ann Waiguru compelled to step aside to pave way for investigations over the controversial awarding of tenders in NYS.
“Whenever someone has been mentioned of engaging in corrupt deals. He or she must do the most honorable thing by stepping down to pave way for investigations. The CBK pointed out suspicious transactions in NYS accounts and the CS ought to take responsibility,” added activist Catherine Nyamato.
They also urged the government to work together with opposition to tame corrupt individuals for the sake of fighting the menace that costs Kenyans billions of shillings every year.
