A water project that was launched by the county government of Nyamira at Gesima ward, Karantini region has been opened.

The project is set to serve at least 1000 residents within a radius of 25KM within Karantini region, with four schools also set to benefit from the Sh2.5 M water project.

Speaking on Tuesday during its official opening ceremony, area MCA Ken Atuti lauded the county leadership and urged the local residents to work with elected leaders to spur growth at the grassroots.

Mr Atuti said the program was long overdue since many residents were said to be walking long distances in search for water with schools being major casualties during drought seasons.

“I want to extend my gratitude to the county leadership for this project. We have to work together as a team to spur growth. We have little time left but to show that devolution has a meaning, these are the kind of projects that will help our people. It’s a massive boost to the surrounding schools and the general public,” he said.

He said he was in talks with Kisii town based business- Ouru Superstores to facilitate pumping of the water to trading centers and area institutions.

“I have been in talks with Ouru and they have confirmed that they will facilitate pumping of water to nearby institutions. But we will start with Karantini Primary and Secondary schools,” he said.

He urged churches and school managements to make good use of the ongoing rains and harvest water for future use.

“This is not the first project in this region but it is at least bigger with a positive impact. We cannot entirely depend on it therefore it is important that we harvest water ahead of January dry spell,” he added.
