Various religious leaders across Kisii County have called on the government to respect the decision by the Labour relations court and the Supreme Court, to implement the 50-60 per cent pay rise the court awarded the teachers.
According to Kisii Apostolic Church International (NAC) Bishop Richard Benson, who was speaking on Monday, the government needs to act and pay the teachers as ordered by the courts so that learning can resume at all public schools in the country.
He said the government, through the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), should not insist that they don’t have money to pay them, and instead sit and have a fruitful conversation and come up with a common ground and terms of payment.
Over the weekend, various religious leaders, including those from the Seventh Day Adventist Church called upon the president to act on the ongoing strike, instead of forcing learning into a stand still.
This comes as the nationwide teachers' strike enters into its third week, after the government failed to pay the teachers by August 31 as ordered by the court.
In Kisii town, teachers have taken to the streets to force the government to honour the court ruling that awarded them a 50-60 percent pay increase.
