Fashion entrepreneurship is fast gaining ground in Kibera as more and more fashion designers and tailors eke out a decent living from the venture.

The tailors have a variety of designs for all genders and age groups, where they either select for their customers or just allow the clients choose their preferred designs and even make adjustments.

Timothy Owino runs a tailoring shop at Kamukunji market, and said on Friday there are new trends emerging in the fashion industry, hence the need to keep abreast with them.

Lillian Ommala said she faces stiff competition from other designers who are setting up shop within Kibera.

For her to rise above her competitors, she needs to be unique.

“One needs to be very unique in her designs to attract more customers. This means I need to do a lot of research to know which designs are in the market. At the moment, I do a blend of kitenge and chiffon materials which brings a blend of African and white feel,’’ said Ommala.

She urged other unemployed women to try out the tailoring classes as it is a great source of income.
